DONATIONS from the public for eight-year-old Rexson Jed who needed eye surgery has been overwhelming with RM19,000 collected and the excess will benefit two others with heavy medical burdens.
P. Panneerselvam, 22, a leukaemia sufferer received RM2,000 while kidney patient Loo Guat Kgoh, 66, received RM5,000.
“I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia two years ago. Every month I'd need about RM1,000 to pay for medication and treatment and sometimes I'd be admitted to the hospital for two to four weeks at a stretch when my condition worsens,” Panneerselvam said.
Grateful: (From left to right) Panneerselvam, Jed, Kok, Loo and Kok’s special assistant Gary Chong during the cheque-presentation ceremony.
He finds it difficult to eat because the skin in his mouth breaks easily and his jaw swells up often.
To make matters worse, he also suffers from constant pain in his legs and body.
The former mechanic now depends entirely on his extended family for any kind of support, including a place to live in as his mother does not work and his father has passed away.
Loo, the other recipient, has had to undergo dialysis regularly.
“I've written a letter to the hospital director, asking for a cancellation of the treatment cost for Loo as she couldn't afford it,” Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said at the cheque-presentation ceremony.
Kok said the amount given to Loo and Panneerselvam was insufficient and urged the public to once again lend a hand as they have done for Jed.
“More private entities should start setting up a medical welfare fund and contribute back to society, especially to the needy,” Kok said, adding that Mewah Club had donated RM8,000 for Jed's surgery.
To donate, write out a cheque made out to “DAP cawangan Seputeh”.
