SHAH ALAM: May 25, 2008
The Selangor Government will go ahead with its plan to give consumers in the state 20 cubic metres of water free every month from next month, and a tariff increase expected next year had no bearing on the matter, Mentri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said.
He said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) had no powers to determine tariffs and only the Water, Energy and Communications Ministry could make changes.
“That (water tariff) is something that we will address later. As it is, no decision has been made on it yet. We will go ahead with what we have planned (give the free water),”' he told a press conference here yesterday.
Abdul Khalid said this is in response to the revelation by Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim in the state assembly on Wednesday that consumers in the Klang Valley would face a 37% tariff increase for water, which would make a cubic metre cost RM1.90 from next year. – Bernama
