Mind your Bahasa, MB tells staffers - The Star

SHAH ALAM: May 6, 2008

Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim wants all correspondence within the state administration to be in proper Bahasa Malaysia.

He said those writing memos, letters, minutes of meetings, reports and texts should have correct spelling and proper words and grammar.

He said at the monthly meeting for staff of the various state government agencies and departments at the state secretariat that he also did not want a mix of English and Bahasa in such correspondence.

The Subang Jaya Municipal Council hosted the event, which was the first for Khalid since becoming Selangor Mentri Besar.

Khalid, who said official documents must also have full and proper usage of salutations, urged all department heads not to sign the documents before going through them first.

“These measures are necessary as it involves the reputation of state departments and civil servants.

“The wrong usage of words would not only embarrass the respective departments but may also result in the state’s civil servants being criticised,” he said.

On another matter, Khalid said he believed that those working for the state were prepared to cooperate with the current leadership.

He added that everyone concerned should be mature and open-minded to accept the people’s decision.

“Islam, through the Quran and Hadith urges Muslims to respect and be loyal to their leadership, more so a leadership that has been elected by the people,” said Khalid.

He also said the Pakatan Rakyat coalition would serve the people of Selangor and work towards everyone’s well being, regardless of their race, religion and political affiliation.

Khalid added the state government would strive towards creating more jobs to help families living under the poverty line to increase their income to RM2,000 a month.
